Public Safety Flag Football Game for the Optimist Club
Captain Michael Barnes of the Lapel Police Department organized the event to assist the Optimist Club in rebuilding what he calls “an essential youth program”.
“The kids need these programs to help them develop not just athletically, but to build character, self-esteem and sportsmanship.” Captain Barnes stated. “I know I played here growing up and it has helped to shape me as a person all these years later. My son plays and is looking forward to the upcoming season.”
Those attending are encouraged to show their Lapel Pride by wearing black and gold or other Lapel sports attire. Players from the past are also being asked to dig out some old photos to donate to the Optimist for the clubhouse once it is rebuilt.
There will be concessions available, with Rick Coleman providing his skills with the grill and Mardi Gras Pizza’s Todd Armstrong will also be vending. Both police and fire departments will have some equipment on hand for the kids to look at and ask questions.
“In addition to the youth football, every game the Optimist collect money that they donate to seriously ill children or families in distress. These are good people and if they don’t deserves some help, who does?”
There will be a $5.00 admission fee for adults and children are free. Direct donations will also be accepted during the game. All proceeds will go to the Optimist Club.
