Job Announcement: Part-Time Police Officer

Position: Part-Time, Non-Benefited

Department: Lapel Police Department

Reports to: Chief of Police Through Chain of Command

Job Description:

The Lapel Police Department has an immediate opening for a part-time police officer and is seeking a dedicated and community-oriented individual to join our team. As a member of our force, you will play a crucial role in maintaining public safety, enforcing laws, and building positive relationships with residents.

Responsibilities:

  • Patrol assigned areas to prevent and detect criminal activity
  • Respond to emergency calls, accidents, and incidents
  • Conduct investigations, gather evidence, and prepare reports
  • Enforce traffic laws and issue citations
  • Assist with community policing initiatives
  • Provide assistance to other law enforcement agencies as needed

Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of Indiana Law Enforcement Academy pre-basic course required and Tier I certification preferred
  • Ability to Pass Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Fitness Standards (may be waived for ILEA Tier I certified applicants)
  • Successfully pass written examination
  • Ability to pass a background investigation and drug screening
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Prior law enforcement experience

Work Schedule:

  • 4-day work week (28 hours total)
  • Shifts may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Compensation:

  • Starting pay: $18 to $21 per hour (commensurate with experience)
  • Stepped pay raises after successful completion of Academy and again after completion of probationary period

  • Off-Duty employment allowed after completion of Probationary Period and Command authorization
